Mission
The HEN Foundation stimulates, develops and sustains the advancement of grassroots activists, progressive social movement organizations, and artist-activists. HEN raises and distributes funds to develop and promote an international community of artist-activists whose work furthers the causes of anti-oppression, cultural innovation and peace with justice. When artist-activists come to the HEN Foundation for financial support, they bring their social justice issue and talent to a unique community. This community helps promote and support other social justice causes and artists through performances and participation in direct action events.
HEN awards artists small grants and coordinates nationally touring political performance road shows. HEN connects progressive organizations with artist-outreach workers. We also chronicle the work of HEN artist-activists and provide an annual oral and visual record of activist issues, struggles, and victories through music, visual art, dance, theater and spoken word. The HEN Foundation supports leadership of women and people of color within movements for justice.
